The Communications Group of Intel has introduced new processors for networking and storage equipment, and Gigabit Ethernet products, aiming help communication equipment vendors accelerate their transition to the new modular approach.

Sean Maloney, EVP and general manager, pointed out, "Intel spent $1.2 billion in communications related R&D last year while many industry players were cutting back. Intel has invested heavily in manufacturing process technology, which will enable the company to begin manufacturing some of its communications products on 90nm technology by next year. These investments have enabled Intel to deliver communications building blocks to customers so they can concentrate resources on specific hardware and software that differentiate and add value to their products."

According to Intel, the new products include a line of network processors for applications extending from the home and office to service providers' central switching offices. The company has also unveiled an integrated I/O processor that is more than twice the speed of its predecessor and helps reduce the cost and complexity of designing networked storage devices.

The new single-chip Gigabit Ethernet products include a Gigabit Ethernet controller for desktop PCs. This new product is expected to reduce the cost of deploying Gigabit Ethernet in PCs by 25 percent, which will help enable a significant migration to gigabit capable PCs this year. Intel has also introduced its first dual port, single-chip controller enabling server manufacturers to add two-Gigabit Ethernet network connections in the space of one. The new controllers are up to 45 percent smaller and use less power than previous products, Intel added.
