Mitsubishi Electric unveils optical devices for 40Gbps transmission

Mitsubishi Electric has announced the release of a tunable dispersion equalizer, optical modulator, and an MEMS optical switch for long-distance, high-capacity 40Gbps optical transmission. The devices are designed primarily for trunk optical networking applications, and are also suitable for metro network and LAN applications.

The tunable dispersion equalizer uses an original grating process to reduce manufacturing errors in grating pitches. The device boasts of a divided thin-film heater that enables precision control of grating temperature distribution. This enables the equalizer to offer a high chromatic dispersion control for optical transmission systems.

With an iron-doped InP substrate as its base, the optical modulator exhibits high insulating properties that reduces parasitic capacitance. The modulator also features flip-chip bonding that removes the need for wires connecting individual elements, allowing for high-speed operations.

The modulator also incorporates a photodiode that uses waveguide elements to further reduce parasitic capacitance. The preamp poles also feature flip-chip bonding that improves speed and sensitivity.

The MEMS optical switch can handle up to 32-by-32 switching scales and utilizes polymer waveguides to mechanically switch transmission routes. The company claims that this allows the switches to offer a no-loss performance that was not attainable with past technologies.
