Royal Philips Electronics has opened two manufacturing facilities in Shanghai, China, to support the LCD and optical storage activities of its Components Division. The plants are expected to help the company meet demand for ICs used in digital consumer electronics, mobile telecommunications, PC-related and automotive infotainment applications.

Philips said, the LCD manufacturing plant has two lines that will produce standard STN color and monochrome displays, and is equipped to produce up to 120,000 units of coupled glass per month. The plant will also feature 6,000 square-meters of cleanroom space, the company added.

The 36,900 square-meter optical storage plant will produce drive mechanisms, loaders and optical pick-up units that are used in CD-R and CD-RW drives. It is designed to replace the old optical storage plant that has been operating in Shanghai since 1996. The new plant will enable the company to centralize its optical storage production in a single plant, Philips stated.
