Toray, Nagoya codevelop synthetic method for DWNT production

Toray Ind. Inc. and Nagoya University have codeveloped a low-cost synthetic method for producing double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWNTs). The companies said the new method could be easily applied to mass production with a lower manufacturing cost. Toray plans to begin commercializing DWNTs in the next two years.

According to Toray, DWNTs are smaller in diameter (1nm to 3nm), stronger and durable, and their inner tubes maintain the inherent SWNT character after outer tube modification. It is used in field emission display (FED) applications. The product can also serve as a suitable nanocomposite filler due to their size, as well as their affinity towards matrix materials, the company added.
