W. L. Gore & Associates Inc. has joined charter members EMCORE Corp. and Picolight Inc. in the SNAP12 multi-source agreement (MSA) for the manufacture and supply of connectorized 12-channel parallel optical modules operating at up to 2.7Gbps per channelfor an aggregate 32Gbps of backplane bandwidth.

The SNAP12 MSA defines common electrical, mechanical and optical specifications for compatible, connectorized 12-channel parallel optical components. Networking equipment manufacturers can be assured that multiple independent sources will supply these high bandwidth products that solve backplane bottlenecks in core routers, switches and cross connect equipment.

Robert Bryan, VP of EMCORE's Fiber Optics Division noted, "Gore's participation in the SNAP12 MSA clearly demonstrates the commitment of optical module manufacturers to address product supply requirements. By offering pluggable parallel optics built to a common specification, customers will have the confidence that multiple sources with adequate ability to meet capacity demands are available."
