Agere Systems has started volume production of a three-dimensional microelectromechanical systems (3D MEMS) optical switch component. According to the company, the component is available in 64-by-64 and 32-by-32 configurations. It is expected to offer system manufacturers a scalable, low-loss solution for high-speed all-optical switching systems, cross-connects and add/drop multiplexers.

Agere's 3D MEMS was fabricated using standard IC processing tools. The component includes control electronics needed to manipulate the mirrors in a switch module. The company anticipates to complete product qualification process within this year.

Chuck Mattera, VP of Optical Core and Metro Networks Division, says, "Agere has been shipping samples of these modules to a number of top-tier customers since June 2001, and we are seeing significant orders for this product."
