Despite the worldwide recession in the electronics industry, semiconductor manufacturers still believe that China will be an important market to expand into, with a growth rate expected to exceed 20 percent this year.

And proof of this belief is the electronicChina 2002 show, which drew exhibits from 270 vendors coming from 16 different countries. Manufacturers such as Fairchild Semiconductor, National Semiconductor, Infineon Technologies, Omron, and Picvue Electronics are have been showcasing their products at the exhibit floors of the Shanghai New International Expo Center, where the show is being held until today, March 15.

Kurt Schrandy, director of hi-tech department of Munich International Exposition Group, said that the exhibition is intended to help international manufacturers find partners in China, and conversely, help manufacturers in China to boost their export businesses.

He also pointed out that China's being a big OEM base for MNCs positions the country to be the largest IC market in Asia-estimated to be worth $11.4 billion.

Sales of DVD players, digital cameras, TV sets, smart cards and portable equipment are also expected to grow 35 percent, further driving the need for semiconductors.
