In a bid to move into the mobile phone market, VIA, the Taiwan-based PC chipset vendor, has began to put its effort on the development of mobile phone chipsets since the second half of last year. "We are simultaneously developing chipsets for different generations of mobile phones," said Howen Chen, director of Research and Development Division of VIA.

As prices continue to increase, multinational mobile phone vendors including Motorola are heavily relying on Taiwan makers. To jump on the bandwagon, many Taiwan manufacturers have already expanded their capacities. As a result, Taiwan is becoming the production base for the mobile phone market worldwide. However, unlike the PC industry, Taiwan still relies on western companies such as ADI and TI to provide key components such as RF. "VIA will still be a chip vendor in the mobile communication market," stated Chen.

Chen expects VIA to provide three types of ICs. Although SoC is the inclination for IC design industry, there are problems in designing a SoC for mobile phones. " The ICs used in mobile phones are made by different process technologies. It is impossible to put them into a single chip now," Chen pointed out.
