Keywords:lumosys v3.3? drill control software? drillstar? microvia drilling control software? cycle mode drilling?

Designed for the DrillStar series of microvia laser drilling systems, the LumoSys V3.3 control software features new functions including cycle-mode drilling, custom hole patterns, and supports up to 19 layer counts.

Cycle-mode drilling reduces heat build-up in the drilling process by firing one laser pulse into each hole in the scanning field and repeating this cycle until all holes have received the prescribed number of pulses. This is different from the common burst-mode drilling where all pulses are fired into one hole to completely drill it before moving to the next hole.

Cycle-mode drilling allows the material to cool down between pulses and is claimed to improve consistency in via profile and provides smoother walls when drilling non-homogeneous materials.

The software also the drilling of user-designed patterns, and supports up to 19 layers of copper and dielectric using a single drill file. Layering will automatically refocus to a defined depth to maximize accuracy and provide optimum drilling conditions.

GSI Lumonics' DrillStar family of laser microvia drilling systems include both CO2 and UV lasers, and feature the ability to drill stepped vias through several board layers.
