The company announced the availability of a MEMS-based variable optical attenuator (VOA) measuring 7.6-by-15.5-by-6.5mm, making it suitable to perform amplification, pre-emphasis, and equalization on low-profile =U applications.

The VOA can be used in WDM equipment, erbium-doped fiber amplifiers, optical add/drop, optical cross-connects, and test and measurement equipment. It also has an array that is configurable to support multichannel applications.

"With innovative packaging and disruptive pricing, the new MegaSense VOA is ideal for both existing broadband applications as well as new applications that require VOAs on each wavelength," said Stephen Montgomery, president, ElectroniCast.

Operating at the C band, the VOA features an attenuation range from 0-30dB and a typical response time of 2ms. It has a maximum insertion loss of 0.8dB and a minimum return loss of 55dB.

The device functions from a 15V driving voltage and -5C to 70C temperatures.

The MEMS-based VOA is priced at under $100 in high-volume quantities.
