Taiwan rushes for OLED
Keywords:OLED? LCD? backlighting panel? lcd backlight? Opto-Electronics and System Laboratories?
Mobile phones equipped with OLED panels are expected to earn this years market in Taiwan. "Taiwan is more capable of developing OLED displays than traditional LCDs," claims Ching Ian Chao, section manager, Optical Systems Division of Opto-Electronics and System Laboratories, an arm of the Taiwan research and development hub ITRI.
Chao says OLED displays combine the characteristics of traditional LCDs and LED-backlit displays. They are also lighter and thinner, and offer low power consumption, high resolution, self-emission, and fast response time. They can likewise be manufactured at a low cost and with a flexible substrate, and can be used in large-area applications.
"OLED displays can operate without the need for backlighting, as it already emits light. Thus, the structure of OLED displays is simpler than that of LCDs, and Taiwan is very capable of supplying key components for this," explained Chao.
In view of this, Taiwan companies are rushing for the development of OLED displays. RiTdisplay Corp. is taking the lead in the competition, having launched the first OLED display for mobile phones in Taiwan. Also, the company had formed an alliance with Agilent Technologies in an attempt to apply OLED displays to OA facilities, and test and measurement equipment.
