Designed for use in OC-192/STM-64 systems, OpNext Inc.'s 10Gbps avalanche photodiode (APD) receiver module offers an end-of life receiver sensitivity of -26dBm at BER of 10(-12).

The company also claims that it also provides several decibels of additional link margin, enabling transceiver designers to develop units that transmit over greater distances while reducing the overall system cost.

The APD module incorporates an APD device and a transimpedance amplifier, providing a gain-bandwidth product >100GHz. The improved sensitivity of the products addresses the losses experienced due to cable attenuation, connector loss, and splice loss.

The module is currently being used in the company's TRV7081 and TRV7061 10Gbps 80km transceivers, but is also available as a discrete module.
