Linear Tech step-down controller delivers up to 4A output

Linear Technology's LTC3701 step-down controller converts an input of 2.5V to 9.8V, into two lower output voltages at up to 4A each, making it suitable for use in Fibre Channel boards, notebook PCs, POS terminals, and graphic cards.

The 16-lead SSOP device operates at 550kHz, permitting the use of small inductors, and also features PolyPhase capability that is claimed by the company to reduce input capacitor requirements by up to 50 percent.

The LTC3701 consumes 500mA of current and allows continuous operation in dropout as the input voltage decreases to the output voltage. For noise-sensitive applications, the device's frequency can be externally synchronized from 300kHz to 750kHz.

The IC contains an independent internal soft-start for each controller, which allows safe and controlled start-up or can be used for power sequencing. To ensure proper start-up of the logic ICs in a system, a power good output signal indicates whether the output voltage is within 7.5 percent of its nominal set point.

The controller also features a user-selectable Burst Mode operation for high efficiency or pulse skipping operation for noise sensitive designs.

The LTC3701 is priced at $3.40 each in 1,000-piece quantities.
