Broadcom Corp. has announced the availability of the BCM8124/8125 and BCM8128/8129 multi-rate 10Gbps MUX/DEMUX chipsets that feature a jitter of 2mUI(rms)lower than the 6mUI(rms) to 7mUI(rms) of competing products and the 10mUI(rms) specified by the ITU.

The chipsets are part of the company's X-PHY product line used in OC-192, STM-64 and 10Gb Ethernet transmission equipment, SONET/SDH optical modules, DWDM equipment, SONET/SDH multiplexers and terminals. They can also be used in digital cross connects, ATM switches, SONET test equipment, and core routers.

Manufactured using the company's 0.13?m CMOS process, the chipsets are also claimed by the company to reduce the size and power consumption of the system by as much as 30 percent and 50 percent, respectively.

Both chipsets feature an integrated clock multiplication unit, clock and data recovery, limiting amplifier, and other features to support requirements for 200-pin and 300-pin MSA modules. They have an input sensitivity of <10mV and an average power consumption of 1.4W. The transceivers operate from a 1.8V supply and can interface to a 3.3V I/O pin.

In addition, the BCM8128/8129 chipset also incorporates phase and threshold adjustments for long and ultra-long reaches. The BCM8129 features the company's Statistical Loss of Signal capability to help users in determining if they have an actual loss of signal in a noisy environment.

The X-PHY devices support data rates from 9.953Gbps to 10.709Gbps to accommodate OC-192 native, 10Gb Ethernet, and OC-192 forward error correction rates. They also include bit order reversal to support multiple protocols and serial data polarity inversion for simpler design and testing of boards.

The BCM8124/8125 and BCM8128 transceivers are packaged in an 11-by-11mm BGA housing, while the BCM8129 is offered in a 15-by-15mm BGA package.

The BCM8124/8125 chipsets are priced at $315, while the BCM8128/8129 chipsets are quoted at $400, each in 1,000-piece quantities.
