Texas Instruments Inc. has unveiled its IDB-1394 bus solution and Bluetooth chipsets, targeted at providing automobiles with in-vehicle infotainment and wireless connectivity applications.

The IDB-1394 technology supports the 1394b protocol, providing a data rate of 100Mbps over 10m of plastic optical fiber (POF) or Cat. 5 UTP cable. This gives designers the flexibility to run the media over POF to minimize EMI and improve signal fidelity, or use UTP cable to significantly reduce overall node cost.

The 1394 solution also includes various link layers such as the CELynx which supports MPEG2 video streaming with 5C copy protection, and the PHY for POF or UTP5.

"TI's solution will help bridge the gap between the automobile and consumer electronics, allowing people to enjoy mobile multimedia entertainment and information," said Brad Little, manager of TI's worldwide automotive advanced bus products.

The IDB-1394 specification is an automotive supplement to the existing IEEE 1394 standards to enable consumer multimedia applications can to be used for in-vehicle networking. In addition, existing 1394 portable devices can be plugged directly into the new automotive multimedia bus through the use of an IDB-1394 defined customer convenience port.

The Bluetooth wireless chipsets provide high-performance, full-rate Bluetooth links, supporting wireless data communications and up to three simultaneous voice links with low power consumption. They can be used in conjunction with the IDB-1394 bus to provide a complete telematics communication system in automotive applications.

"TI's Bluetooth automotive solutions will enable us to cost-efficiently provide hands-free phone operation to our products," said Gerhard Nuessle, Head of Development, TEMIC Sprachverarbeitung GmbH.

"Customers will find that Bluetooth communications gives them easy-to-use wireless flexibility for a wide range of applications that can now be used in the car as well as the home," he added.

Texas Instruments Inc. is an exhibitor at this year's International IC ? China Conference and Exhibition (IIC-China), which will be held in Shanghai on April 8 and 9, Beijing on April 11 and 12, and Shenzhen on April 15 and 16. IIC-China is organized by eMedia Asia Ltd, a Global Sources and CMP Media joint venture.
