The WM8770 and WM8771 24-bit codecs from Wolfson Microelectronics Ltd integrate an 8-channel mux with stereo ADC and 8-channel DAC. They are designed to support audio playback of Dolby 5.1 plus L+R stereo mix down and Dolby EX6.1 or 7.1 applications typically required in new A/V receiver products.

Developed together with Sanyo, the devices are based on Wolfson's proprietary multi-bit sigma delta architecture. The ADCs and DACs offer sampling frequencies between 8kHz to 192kHz, and are designed to run at different sampling rates. Each input channel has an analog domain mute and programmable gain control.

"The WM8770 and WM8771 integrate all the necessary ADCs, multiplexing, DACs, and volume control for multichannel audio. They are designed to work in conjunction with surround sound decoder DSPs from Sanyo and others," said David Milne, Wolfson's managing director.

The WM8771 has three separate analog outputs for record monitoring, while the WM8770 includes an analog domain volume control and provides a 6-channel direct analog input to the output volume control.

Both devices are controlled via a three-wire serial interface that provides access to features including channel selection, volume control, mute, de-emphasis, and power management facilities.

The 64-pin TQFP devices are priced at $7.91 each in quantities of 1,000.
