Intended for 30W applications, the LTC3704 current-mode positive-to-negative dc/dc controller from Linear Technology Corp. drives an external MOSFET to deliver more power than integrated inverting switching regulators and charge pumps.

The controller can be used for high power negative supplies found in systems such as OC-192 routers, VoIP systems, and industrial and SLIC power supplies, as well as scanners, portable electronic devices, and basestations.

The LTC3704 maximizes efficiency by eliminating the need for a current sense resistor and using the power MOSFET's on-resistance. Users can also program the oscillator frequency from 50kHz to 1MHz, allowing the use of smaller inductor and capacitors.

The controller features a user-controlled pulse skip mode for low noise operation or Burst Mode for high efficiency at light loads. It operates from an input of 2.5V to 36V, and draws 250mA during operation and 10mA during shutdown.

The LTC3704 is offered in a 10-lead MSOP housing and is guaranteed for operation from -40C to 85C.
