Pirelli single-mode fiber-optic cables operate at 850nm

Claimed by the company to be the industry's first single-mode fiber-optic cable to operate at 850nm, the FineLight Giga and Base optical fibers from Pirelli Communications Cables and Systems North America enable system providers to build fiber-based networks that meet the requirements of both multi-mode and single-mode operation.

The 850nm operation uses standard low-cost VCSEL devices, while the upgrade can be accomplished simply by switching to single-mode equipment. Both are suited for use in fiber-to-the-business, premises, and LAN applications.

"The current hybrid multi-mode and single-mode cables now being deployed in LAN and premises applications are a stop-gap measure until prices come down on the 1310 lasers. FineLight fibers offer a future-proofed, cost-effective alternative," said Brian DiLascia, VP and GM of Pirelli Communications Cables and Systems North America, said.

Aside from 850nm, the FineLight fibers also operate at 1,310nm and 1,550nm, and support data rates of 100Mbps up to 5km for the Base fiber and 1Gbps up to 1km for the Giga fiber. They have an attenuation of <2.2dB/km at 850nm a bandwidth performance of >600MHz-km for the Base version and >1GHz-km for the Giga version.

The FineLight fibers meet existing universal standards, including the ITU-T standard G.652, and uses standard SC, ST, and FC connectors.
