Infineon Technologies has entered into a supply agreement with Taiwan-based TECO Electric & Machinery Co. Ltd to provide microcontroller chips for use in smart cards. TECO is a supplier of smart cards for Taiwan's National Healthcare Chip Card project.

Infineon says it will supply TECO with 66Plus security controllers, featuring 32Kb EEPROM. The chips will be manufactured using 0.22? process technology by United Microelectronics Corp., Infineon's manufacturing partner in Taiwan.

The 66Plus controllers will be used by Taiwan's National Healthcare Chip Card project, which aims to supply 22 million Taiwanese residents with smart cards between July 2002 and the end of 2003. The cards are designed to replace existing paper health card systems, and to store cardholder information such as medical records, treatment and visititation records, and administrative data.

TECO and the Taiwan government expect to issue a total of 24 million chip cards, including replacement and spare cards.
