Tyco Electronics Power Systems' HW005 2-by-1 single-output dc/dc converters deliver up to 20W and up to 5A at 1V to 5V out from a nominal 24V or 48V input. The series lets manufacturers of communications and networking equipment use standard surface-mount assembly techniques. The 8.5mm profile allows high-density installation.

Use of a column-pin connector is said to allow the module to self-align on the customer board during the reflow process. The column-pin technology automatically compensates for any coplanarity problems and ensures that reliable connections are made during the assembly.

The converter uses synchronous-rectification technology to deliver a typical full-load efficiency of 87 percent at 3.3V

Available output voltages are 5, 3.3, 2.5, 1.8, 1.5, 1.2 and 1V with an output voltage adjustment trim of 10 percent and an output voltage set-point of 1 percent.

Other features are said to include remote on/off and protection from high temperature, current and voltage levels. The module has an input-to-output isolation of 2.250kVdc and is designed to meet requirements for basic insulation, Tyco said.

Samples are available now. The modules are priced at $18.60 each in 10,000-unit quantities.
