The ADSP-2199x family of mixed signal DSPs from Analog Devices Inc. integrates a 160MIPS, 16-bit DSP based on the company's 219x DSP core, and an 8-channel, 14-bit 20MSa/s ADC core into a single chip, and is targeted towards signal processing and embedded control applications.

Showcased at the International IC ? China Conference and Exhibition (IIC-China), whose second installment will open in Beijing tomorrow, April 11, the DSPs are designed for use in industrial applications such as motor control and servo positioning systems, industrial process automation and data acquisition systems, intelligent sensor interfaces, robotics (industrial and consumer), optical networking control, and power systems control.

High-speed ADC data is interfaced to the DSP core memory using a dedicated DMA channel. This permits oversampling and data extrapolation techniques, in intelligent sensor interfaces by efficiently balancing the data throughput of the ADC with the computational capability of the DSP core.

The ADC offers a typical SNR of 70dB and is guaranteed by the company to function over the full industrial operating temperature range.

The ADSP-21990 version features 4Kwords of program and data RAM, and an external addressable memory space of 1Mword. The ADSP-21991 version is pin-compatible with the ADSP-21990, and offers up to 32Kwords of program RAM and 8Kwords of data RAM.

Additional mixed-signal functions of the devices include dual S/H amplifiers for applications requiring simultaneous sampling, a precision on-chip voltage reference, and an integrated power on reset circuit.

The ADSP-1990 model also offers different PWM generation modules (suitable for both motor and switching power converter control), incremental encoder interfaces, timers, serial communications ports, watchdog timers, and interrupt controllers.

Both members of the ADSP-2199x family of products are supported by the company's CROSSCORE hardware and software development tools.

Available in both 176-pin TQFP and 196-ball mini-BGA packages, the ADSP-21990 and ADSP-21991 are priced at &18.45 and $21.95, respectively.

The initial leg of IIC-China was held in Shanghai from April 8 to 9, while the final leg will be staged in Shenzhen on April 15 and 16. IIC-China is organized by eMedia Asia Ltd, a Global Sources and CMP Media joint venture.
