Cypress Semiconductor Corp. and Realtek Semiconductor Corp. have jointly developed a USB 2.0 scanner reference design that scans an A4-sized paper at 600dpi, 16-bit color mode in <20s. The design incorporates Cypress' CS5979AM USB 2.0 peripheral controller and Realtek's RTS8821 scanner controller.

USB 2.0 scanners are claimed to achieve speeds of up to 480Mbps40 times faster than USB 1.1 devices.

The RTS8821 supports up to 2,400dpi resolution and integrates the necessary scanning functions?including CCD/CIS Interface, 16-bit analog front end, scanning control, stepper motor control, DRAM interface, and buffer management. It also extends support for USB 1.1, DMA interface for IEEE 1394/USB 2.0, and performs fundamental pixel processing into a single chip.

The CS5979AM is a custom device developed specifically for the reference design, and is based on the EZ-USB FX2 architecture.

Cypress Semiconductor is an exhibitor at this year's International IC ? China Conference and Exhibition (IIC-China), the second leg of which will open in Beijing on April 11. The initial leg of IIC-China was held in Shanghai from April 8 to 9, while the final leg will be staged in Shenzhen on April 15 and 16. IIC-China is organized by eMedia Asia Ltd, a Global Sources and CMP Media joint venture.
