Photon Vision Systems Inc. has developed a CMOS imaging sensor with an 8.3-million-pixel resolution (3,840x2,160)four times higher than that of HDTV and 32 times the resolution of standard TV. Applications for the device include digital cinematography, studio broadcasting, security/biometrics, scientific analysis, and industrial inspection.

Photon director of marketing Terry Zarnowski said JVC Laboratory of America is integrating three of Photon's QuadHDTV sensors into the Ultra High Definition TV (UDTV) color camera it has in development.

The UDTV camera will be capable of delivering 25 million pixels and will operate at 30 full frames per second (progressive or interlaced). Also, IBM Corp. may incorporate the sensor into a 9.2-megapixel, 22.2-inch LCD.

The sensor integrates Photon's Active Column Sensor technology, which, according to Zarnowski, enables Photon's sensors to equal or exceed the resolution of charge-coupled device imagers. The sensor is priced starting at $5,000.
