Bluetooth technology and IEEE 802.11 can coexist in a single system, concurred experts from Philips Semiconductor and Texas Instruments Inc. in a technology forum held at the 7th annual International IC ? China Conference and Exhibition (IIC-China).

Speakers Leo de Buday, product manager at Philips Semiconductors, and Yao Rihua, application engineer at TI, reported that both Bluetooth and IEEE 802.11 offer have their own strengths and weaknesses from application and business standpoints. Despite being rival technologies, both speakers agreed that these two technologies can be incorporated into a single device.

It is said that Bluetooth solutions will help reduce device costs down to $5 in two years' time. Meanwhile, production costs for IEEE 802.11-based devices are seen to range from $10 to $15 over the same period.

The technology forum, entitled "Wireless Networking: Bluetooth vs. IEEE 802.11," is one of the highlights of this year's IIC-China, which is co-located with the 2nd Embedded Systems Conferences ? China (ESC-China). The conferences and exhibition kicked off April 8 in Shanghai, and has moved to Beijing on April 10. The final leg of the show will be staged in Shenzhen on April 15 and 16. IIC-China and ESC-China are eeEvents organized by eMedia Asia Ltd, a Global Sources and CMP Media joint venture.
