Linear Technology's LTC3717 step-down dc/dc controller for DDR memory and SSTL active termination can accept an input voltage from 4V to 36V, enabling the chip to be powered from a high voltage source and eliminating the need for an intermediate step-down dc/dc controller.

The chip can sink and source current from1A to 20A and operate with up to 97 percent efficiency. It also provides a 0.65 percent accurate output voltage (termination voltage) equal to one half of the memory's reference voltage.

The 16-lead SSOP device requires no sense resistor and provides true current mode control. The LTC3717 is also stable with any output capacitor including ceramic capacitors.

The LTC3717 is quoted at $2.95 each in 1,000-piece quantities.
