NEC PHY chip integrates four 622Mbps SONET/SDH channels

The 5PD98413 ATM and POS PHY device from NEC Corp. integrates four 622Mbps SONET/SDH framer function channels on one chip, making it suitable for 3G mobile basestations, DSLAMs, and other high-end WAN edge equipment.

"This product represents a significant step in NEC's commitment to delivering solutions to enable faster mobile base-station and DSLAM equipment to satisfy the demands of this growing customer base," said Ashok Bansal, marketing manager of the communications strategic business unit at NEC Electronics Inc.

Manufactured using the company's 0.255m CMOS process, the chip operates from a 2.5V and 3.3V power supply, and also offers storage of ATM cells and IP packets in SONET/SDH frames.

The 40-by-40mm 576-pin BGA device also integrates a serdes clock recovery function that generates a clock from data received via the interface on the circuit side. This enables a SONET/SDH optical communication interface area to be realized through the combination of the 5PD98413 with an optical module configuration.

The device also offers an APS, eight GPIOs, and an extensive range of OAM control functions such as execution of warning, fault, and line quality degradation detection, and line quality monitoring. It has 1,024 bytes of transmit/receive FIFO memory and a 32-bit, 104MHz bus.

Pricing for the 5PD98413 is expected to be $250 per unit in sample quantities.
