Designed to control power for multiple CCFLs found in desktop LCD monitors, multiple lamp panels, and low-ambient light displays, the LX1688 RangeMAX IC from Microsemi Corp. allows designers to use multiple controllers to drive multiple lamps with synchronized outputs, with one controller designated as the master, and the others as slaves.

Product designers can employ either analog or external wide-range digital dimming techniques with the LX1688, depending on their application needs. A dual feedback control loop is provided to regulate both maximum lamp strike voltage and lamp current. As an added safety feature, the LX1688 shuts down automatically in the event of an open or broken lamp.

The 24-pin TSSOP device operates from a 3.3V to 5V supply, and is available in a version that allows extended temperature operation from -400C to 850C.

The LX1688 is priced at $1.86 for the standard version and $2.23 for the extended temperature version, both in quantities of 10,000 units.
