Virtual IP Group Inc. has announced the release of the CS6002 MP3 decoder fully-compliant with the MPEG 1/2 Layer 3 decoding standard and tuned for the Xtensa IV processor core from Tensilica Inc.

Offered as a software library object or in source-code format, the CS6002 has been designed for the Xtensa using C, assembly, and Tensilica's Tensilica Instruction Extension (TIE) languages, thereby minimizing processor overhead (16MHz for CD audio quality) and memory requirements.

The decoder also includes support for VBR and free-format MP3 tracks.

"MP3 decoding has become a 'must have' feature in digital audio consumer products. Utilizing Virtual IP Group's MP3 decoder Tensilica's customers can now add MP3 playback to their Xtensa based designs with minimal MHz and gate count overhead," stated Larry Przywara, Tensilica's director of strategic alliances.

"With the addition of customer defined instructions and other application packages such as Dolby Digital (AC-3) and Bluetooth available through our Xtensions Network, Tensilica's licensees can efficiently develop differentiated SOCs that meet demanding cost, power and time to market requirements," he added.

The CS6002 is available for a royalty-free license fee as low as $30,000.
