Infineon Technologies AG has announced the release of the Smart ROADM 20-channel reconfigurable OADM module that dynamically selects the wavelengths to be added or dropped, as opposed to traditional OADMs that need to be physically-configured to drop specific, predetermined wavelengths.

Intended for DWDM cores, MANs, long-haul applications, and all-optical networks, the Smart ROADM integrates a demultiplexer, multiplexer, switch matrix, VOA, and optical power monitors into a 150-by-150-by-59mm package.

The module provides 20 fully reconfigurable channels, with a drop/continue capability that allows up to 50 percent of a signal to be dropped from a channel, while the remaining half is routed through another destination.

A self-calibrating electronic controller with a standard RS-232 interface is also built-in to allow communication with higher level network control electronics. The controller also includes look-up tables for calibration, error tables, and an internal temperature controller.

The device is manufactured using the company's SiO2/Si process and allows its firmware to be remotely upgraded without service interruption.

The Smart ROADM is priced at $20,000 in small volumes.
