A SONET/SDH LIU from TDK Semiconductor Corp. operates at 155.52 Mbps (STS-3 or STM-1) and provides a synchronized clock that can be used for backplanes running at 311MHz.

The 78P2254 can be interfaced to a 75-ohm coaxial cable using CMI coding, and it is said to provide all the necessary transmit and receive circuitry to interface to a digital framer via serial PECL or parallel 4- or 8-bit CMOS.

The device is manufactured in BiCMOS technology and can operate with a 3.3V or 5V power supply. Broadband product-line manager Michelle Ng said the part can generate a 311MHz transmit clock to allow CMI data to be retimed prior to transmission from a line card.

Applications in addition to 311MHz backplanes include WAN and ATM transmission, DSL access multiplexers, digital cross-connects, add/drop multiplexers, test equipment, and digital loop carriers.

The single-chip transmitter includes a PLL to multiply the 19.44MHz (SONET) reference clock to the transmission frequency. The receiver provides adaptive equalization for accurate clock and data recovery.

The device is packaged in a 64-pin TQFP and is priced starting at $29.36 in quantities of 1,000. Sampling is under way.
