The STi5588 fourth-generation DVD decoder from STMicroelectronics supports progressive scan video output, as well as MLP decoding and multichannel LPCM audio formats, and CCPM decryption and Verance audio watermarking.

Progressive scan means that the picture information is accumulated simultaneously and produced in line-by-line or sequential outputs. This results in a non-interlaced image with full vertical and horizontal resolution captured in a single rapid shutter event.

The SoC solution integrates an A/V decoder together with a 32-bit processor, digital video encoder with video DACs, and optical interface electronics. When used in tandem with the company's L6315 DVD optical interface chip, the DVD system architecture is reduced to a single SDRAM and Flash memory.

The STi5588 also has a protocol that enables the error-code correction process required while reading a DVD disk, to be shared between the decoder and the L6315.

The chip is comes bundled with the company STCM DVD software that allows customers to customize their DVD player's user interface using third-generation user interface control language.

The software also allows user to control the hardware design for critical components such as VFDs, Flash and remote controls.
