Oki Electric, Fujikura establish optical transceiver venture

Oki Electric Ind. Co. Ltd and Fujikura Ltd have established SIGMA-LINKS Inc., a joint venture for the development, manufacture and sale of small form factor and next generation fiber-optic transceivers. The new company will target the telecom and datacom markets. The new company is expected to generate sales revenue of $200 million in 2003 and to capture a 20 percent market share worldwide.

Oki will provide the new company with optical device technologies such as laser diodes and photodetectors, GaAs ICs as well as a continued development of support for fiber-optic transceivers applicable for DWDM and high-speed optical network systems with 40Gbps transmission speeds.

At the same time, Fujikura will provide optical fiber and fiber-optic connector technology to the new company. It will entrust the manufacture of products developed by the new company to Tohoku Fujikura and another subsidiary company in Thailand. Fujikura aims to reduce costs and expand business in optical converters and other product areas using small form factor and next-generation optical transceivers from the new company.
