Plasma display panels (PDPs) are seen as one of the most promising products in the next half decade, and demand for them is expected to touch 3 million units in 2003. In terms of revenues, plasma displays are expected to account for 41 percent of the total market for large-screen displays with projected revenues of $2.27 billion by 2007.

The continuing drop in prices of smaller plasma panels is expected to boost the market further. Moreover, the current slowdown in the market, which has led to a general downtrend in the prices of computers and other electronic goods, is likely to force manufacturers to further reduce PDP prices.

PDPs are also moving from the niche market of business applications to the mass market for consumer TV receivers. The arrival of plasma displays has already altered the matrix of the projector market with a flood of high-brightness, lightweight products.

Plasma displays are emerging as the future of TV receivers, due largely to aggressive production and price-cutting by major manufacturers. In the next 5 years, PDP TV receivers are estimated to account for more than 80 percent of the units produced, and 70 percent of the market value. Europe and Japan are leading the adoption of PDP TV receivers. Over 130,000 PDP TV receivers are likely to be shipped in Japan this year. Current trends suggest that, all things being equal, PDPs would soon take over a good chunk of the TV receiver market.

Most PDPs in the business segment are used in booth at conventions, in high-end conference rooms and boardrooms, or as public information terminals. Other growth areas include financial exchanges and retail or signage applications.
