GSI Lumonics Inc. has released the TrimSmart EP1000 laser trimmer for the adjustment of embedded passive components in PCBs.

The machine is capable of trimming a full range of resistors using test pads as small as 250?m(?), and features an accuracy of 0.02 percent. The system handles resistor values from 0.1 ohm to 1 gigaohms and board sizes up to 534-by-635mm.

By mounting passive components within the inner layers of multi-layer PCBs, surface area on the outer layer currently occupied by conventional SMT passive components is made available for more complex active components. This allows greater functionality to be attained within a smaller board size.

"We believe that embedded passive technology will be embraced by innovative PCB manufacturers who are seeking to increase market share and profit margins in the currently difficult market," said Charles Winston, President and CEO.

David Clark, General Manager for GSI Lumonics' Electronics business unit added "we have leveraged proven technologies from our established circuit trim and micro-via drilling products into a new platform designed specifically for this application."
