Sanyo Electric Co. Ltd has developed a blue-violet laser diode that features a low-noise beam structure and is suitable for use as a light source in next-generation DVD systems.

Produced using ion implantation, the laser diode's low-noise structure offers higher levels of stability and lower current consumption.

Ion implantation technology uses a strong electric field to force ionized atoms into a semiconductor, while allowing the amount and depth of the atoms to be controller with consistent reproducibility. The procedure is mainly used in silicon LSI production for doping impurities in semiconductors.

The 5.6mm(?) diode features a fundamental traverse mode that generates a single stable beam, enabling the beam to be focused into a tiny spot using simple optics. The diode also has a built-in photodiode for monitoring the output supply and a lasing wavelength of 405nm.

The diode consumes 45mA, while producing an output of 5mW. It has a parallel beam divergence of 8 and perpendicular beam divergence of 30.
