Alps develops SDARS tuner module

Alps Electric Co. Ltd has announced the development of the TDFA1 tuner module for the radio broadcasts of Sirius Satellite Radio Inc. using the US-based Satellite Digital Audio Radio Service (SDARS) broadcasting service.

SDARS is claimed to provide a sound quality comparable to CDs and uses satellites, enabling broadcasts to be received across a wider area, as well as allowing for favorable reception inside moving objects such as vehicles.

The TDFA1 integrates two tuner unitsone for the satellite and one for the gap filler and allows simultaneous reception of both satellite and gap filler frequencies. The device has a main satellite reception frequency of 2.32229GHz and a gap filler reception frequency of 2.33020GHz.

Gap filler frequencies enables reception when the satellite frequency is interrupted by obstacles such as tall buildings.

The 40-by-90-by-19.5mm module offers a bandwidth of 4.5MHz and a satellite antenna gain of 69dB. It operates from single 3.3V supply and draws 300mA of current.

The module also integrates the company's voltage-controlled oscillator that provides a phase noise characteristic of -70dBc/Hz (1kHz offset).

The TDFA1 is priced starting at about $115.42.
