Sharp Corp. has announced that it will begin constructing a new factory at Taki-gun, Mie Prefecture, Japan next month. The plant will focus on next-generation small LCDs for mobile phones, PDAs, digital cameras and other portable devices. It is scheduled to begin operations in October 2003 with an expected monthly capacity of 4 million units of 2-inch LCDs.

According to Sharp, the move is due to the anticipated rise in demand for LCDs next year based on the present situation of design-ins. The company projects the production capacity at its Tenri plant will not be enough to handle this expected increase in demand.

Sharp also announced it will start mass production at its Tenri plant in October 2002 with a proposed monthly capacity of 2.5 million units of 2-inch LCDs.
