Time stamp references from global-positioning system satellites will create accurate time slices for the "fractional lambda switching" service of optical startup Synchrodyne Networks Inc., the company said in its initial description of the service Monday (April 29) at the IEEE International Conference on Communications.

A "fractional pipe" allows a wavelength channel to be segmented similar to a circuit-switched leased line, said Synchrodyne cofounder Mario Baldi, a professor at Turin Polytechnic in Italy.

The generalized multi-protocol label switching (G-MPLS) standard can be used for fractional wavelengths as well as for full wavelength channels, Baldi said. The advantage in time slicing an optical channel is that very simple multistage switching fabrics, including Banyan networks and similar switches that often block signals, can be used in place of non-blocking fabrics. Any blocking encountered in a standard Banyan switch can be alleviated by a combination of time-sliced fractional wavelengths and a selection of multiple DWDM channels, Baldi said.

Equipment based on such systems would use a small amount of input memory?in the range of tens of kilobytes?compared to other optical MPLS systems, Baldi said. The addition of a GPS time card to an optical switch would only add $100 or so to the cost of the system, and the card could be augmented with a local cesium clock for accurate time-slot creation.
