International Rectifier has released the IRF6126 and IRF6217 p-channel HEXFET power MOSFETs designed specifically for active clamp reset circuits in 48V isolated dc/dc converters using forward converter, flyback, or similar topologies.

The company claims that the use of a p-channel MOSFET instead of an n-channel MOSFET simplifies drive circuitry since it eliminates the need for a high side gate drive.

Both 150V devices are packaged in SO-8 casings, providing 15 percent lower on-resistance than the company's previous p-channel devices in D-Pak casings. The IRF6216 features an on-resistance of 24 milliohms while the IRF6217 has a maximum on-resistance of 2.4 ohms.

The IRF6216 and IRF6217 enable compact implementation of an active circuit to reset transformer core flux, which builds up during primary switch-on time.

Pricing for the IRF6216 is at 39 cents, while the IRF6217 is quoted at 17, each in 5,000-unit quantities.
