Designed for notebooks PCs, the XP4 3D graphics processor from Trident Microsystems Inc. features full-fledged DirectX 8.1 implementation and delivers a 3D graphics performance of 1 billion pixels/s, while dissipating <3W.

The XP4 is claimed to deliver full DirectX 8.1 visual quality, using only 30 million transistorsless than half the number of the nearest desktop equivalent.

The processor features CoolPower power management capability that enables dynamic clock gating, frequency scaling, and workload balancing to achieve the power consumption.

DirectX 8.1 is implemented via the BrightPixel rendering engine that includes both fully-programmable vertex and pixel shader to enable 3D graphics programmers to individually color each pixel uniquely. The engine also draws groups of pixels as rectangular tiles instead of standard scan lines to improve memory bandwidth efficiency.

The XP4 also features SmartTile memory architecture to support either 64-bit or 128-bit memory bus interface with DDR DRAM at clock rates of up to 666MHz DDR, corresponding to a peak memory bandwidth of 10.4GBps.

The processor supports four simultaneous output displays: TFT, DVI, CRT and TV out. The TFT interface can directly drive any standard LCD panel through the internal dual-channel LVDS driver, while the DVI panel interface can drive any standard DVI panel through the internal TMDS driver.

The XP4 can support a screen resolution of up to QXGA, while the TV out display can support up to XGA.

Manufactured using a 0.135m CMOS technology, the 250MHz XP4 occupies a 31-by-31mm footprint. The company is also offering the XP4m16 and XP4m32 multichip modules that contain the XP4 silicon die and 16MB/32MB of FBGA frame buffer memory.

The XP4, XP4m16, and XP4m32 are priced at $39.95, $49.95, and $57.95, respectively.
