Altera Corp. has announced that its Quartus II v2.0 design software now supports Red Hat's Linux 7.1 OS, allowing PLD designers to use low cost Linux-based server farms to reduce development costs and design cycle times.

Linux also supports load sharing applications making it suitable for high-performance system-on-a-programmable-chip designs.

"Engineers are using high performance distributed networks for high-density PLD design," said Tim Southgate, vice president of software and tools marketing at Altera. "Linux-based workstations offer a low-cost, high-capacity alternative for design engineers who prefer a UNIX environment."

Altera designed the Linux edition of Quartus II to run the OS directly without any additional software such as the WINE Windows compatibility layer. The design software also supports Windows 98/2000/NT, Sun Solaris, and HP-UX systems.

Subscription for the Linux edition of the Quartus II v2.0 software starts at $2,995 and includes the Quartus II design software, as well as upgrades and service packs for 12 months.
