Siliconix power supply controller prolongs battery life

The Si9138 power supply controller from Vishay Siliconix works in the current mode to provide tightly-regulated 3.3V and 5V dc/dc converter outputs with individual on/off control to help prolong battery life.

Designed for dc/dc power conversion applications in network equipment, telecom systems, and battery-operated products, the Si9138 also features an adjustable 5V to 12V output set by an external resistor divider, 3.3V reference output, and a 5V, 30mA linear regulator output.

The controller operates in continuous PWM mode and offers PSM operation at light load. With a fixed frequency of 300kHz, output voltage regulation is placed at 13 percent total over the full temperature, input voltage, and load-current range.

Conversion efficiencies approaching 95 percent are achieved with synchronous rectification permitting delivery of up to 75W of power.

The chip has an input voltage range of 5.5V to 30V, a power-good signal with delay, internal frequency compensation networks, and automatic boot-strapping. The controller design requires just three inductors, eliminating the need for a transformer is necessary. Circuit features include protection against overvoltage, undervoltage, and overcurrent.

The Si9138 is available in a 28-pin SSOP casing and is specified to operate over the extended commercial temperature range of 00C to 900C.
