STMicroelectronics has announced the release of the M25P40 (4Mb) and M25P80 (8Mb) serial Flash memories targeted for serial code-download in HDDs, DVD players, graphics cards, WLANs, and STBs.

Manufactured using an advanced CMOS process, both devices operate from a single 2.7V to 3.6V supply and offer a minimum data retention of 20 years with a write endurance of 100,000 cycles.

The M25P40 is shipped in an 8-pin S08 (150mil) package, organized as 8-by-512Kb sectors and provides a sequential read time of 168ms. The M25P80 has a sequential read time of 335ms and is organized in 16-by-512Kb sectors. It is shipped an 8-pin S08 (200mil) package.

Both also feature sector or bulk erase, four write protection modes, 15A deep power-down mode, and hardware/software write protection setting.

Serial Flash memories are used for applications that require voice and image storage, especially those constrained by power, available pins, space, and performance. The memories enable program code to be downloaded upon power-up from external Flash devices.
