The worldwide silicon wafer area shipments improved by almost 15 percent during the first quarter of 2002 compared to the fourth quarter of 2001, according to the Semiconductor Equipment and Materials Int. (SEMI) in its quarterly analysis of the silicon wafer industry.

Total silicon wafer area shipments were 1.11 million square inches during the most recent quarter, up from the 878 million square inches shipped during the previous quarter and the second quarter in a row in which wafer shipments increased sequentially. The new quarterly total area shipments still represent a 20 percent decline compared to last year's first quarter.

"It is encouraging to see strong quarterly improvement in wafer shipments, though they remain well below the 2000 peak," said Stanley T. Myers, president and CEO of SEMI. "Because revenues are not commensurate with volume increases, silicon manufacturers face a longer road to recovery. The situation may be problematic as the overall semiconductor industry cycle picks up. We remain concerned that silicon-manufacturing companies have a constrained workforce and are showing signs of lengthening silicon product lead times," he added.
