Maxim touchscreen controllers withstand 115kV ESD

The MXB7843 and MXB7846 4-wire touchscreen controllers from Maxim Integrated Products are ESD-protected up to 18kV contact discharge and 115kV air gap discharge, eliminating the need for external transient-voltage suppression or absorption devices.

Both contain a 12-bit ADC with SPI/QSPI/Microwire-compatible serial interface, analog inputs, and high-speed, low on-resistance switches for driving resistive touch screens, making the controllers suitable for battery-operated systems such as PDAs and other portable equipment.

The MXB7846 adds an internal 2.5V reference, an on-chip temperature sensor with 120C accuracy, and direct battery measurement. It also supports touch-pressure measurements without additional circuitry.

The internal 2.5V reference may be disabled, allowing the use of an external reference or to make ratiometric measurements.

The MXB7843/MXB7846 can make fully differential position measurements from the touch screen, eliminating the errors resulting from routing and switch resistance. They interface to the host controller through the serial interface and offer software-selectable resolution from 8 bits to 12 bits and sampling rates from 10kHz to 125kHz.

Both operate from a 2.5V to 5.25V supply voltage and consume 2805A (125kSa/s) and <25A in shutdown mode. They are rated for operation from -400C to 850C.

Offered in 16-pib QSOP and TSSOP casings, the MXB7843 and MXB7846 are priced at $2.15 and $2.30, respectively.
