SK Telecom has completed the development of its next generation streaming video compression called the H.26L technology. The company is scheduled to provide multimedia streaming video services based on this technology starting June 2002 after its pilot service through a PDA for one month.

According to SK Telecom, the new technology passed the standards conducted by the ITU-T. The compression rate of the technology is improved by 40 percent to 50 percent compared to a MPEG-4 system. By using the H.26L technology, a particular video is compressed by up to 0.8Mb, allowing customers to pay less than the previous amount charged.

SK Telecom plans to provide a variety of streaming video services by the time the VOD-enabled terminals are launched.
