The broadband and cable modem industry experienced an increase in its subscriber base and strong revenue growth from equipment sales worldwide in 2001, according to the latest report from Frost & Sullivan entitled "World Cable Modem and Head-End Equipment Markets."

The study revealed that worldwide cable modem and cable modem termination system (CMTS) markets generated $1.61 billion in revenues in 2001, up 28 percent from the previous year. More growth is expected through 2004, when the market should peak with nearly $2.5 billion in revenues, Frost predicts.

Further, the study forecasted that in the short term, most industry growth will occur in North America ? by far the most advanced market both in terms of revenue and end users. However, Europe, Asia Pacific, and Latin America are poised to make significant inroads throughout the forecast period.
