OSE Systems Inc. and SIGNALS+SOFTWARE Ltd (S+S) have announced a reference platform for an adaptive multi-rate transcoder to be used in wireless infrastructure applications.

The platform consists of Motorola's MSC8101 StarCore-based DSP, OSE's OSEck distributed DSP RTOS, and the Adaptive Multi-Rate (AMR) transcoder engine software from S+S. The solution is aimed at accelerating the development time of products and enable powerful network infrastructure applications.

A typical system design running on a single MSC8101 is claimed to process >30 AMR channels at 300MCPS using only internal SRAM.

The MSC8101 DSP includes a communications processor module and an industry standard 60X bus interface, and is intended for use in 2.5G/3G systems, wireless transcoding, and IP telephony.

The reference platform software architecture is divided into different levels running on the OSEck RTOS, allowing the same transcoder engine to be used on single or multi-DSP platform with only the I/O framework to customize.

The OSEck also features a message-passing technology that allows channel scheduling and encoding/decoding tasks to be transparent to the application developers.

The results of this integration shows that a system can process over 30 AMR channels on a single MSC8101 running at 300MCPS with the OSEck RTOS, using only internal SRAM.
