The LTC3700 step-down dc/dc controller from Linear Technology Corp. operates up to 94 percent efficiency and includes an on-chip 150mA LDO linear regulator, housed in a 10-lead MSOP casing.

Designed for use in battery-powered devices and FPGA/DSP cores, the 550kHz device operates from 2.5V to 9.8V sources and provides an output voltage that is adjustable down to 0.8V. It has an output voltage accuracy of 12.5 percent, while the LDO regulator provides 13.75 percent accuracy.

The switching controller section drives an external P-channel MOSFET, which can be turned on continuously in dropout for longer use of a battery source. The device's operating frequency also allows it to use small inductors for up to 3A of load current and its constant frequency reduces induced noise while minimizing output filtering.

Prices start at $2.35 each in 1,000-piece quantities.
