Cypress Semiconductor Corp. has announced the release of the POSIC10G (part number CY7C9547-FAC) single-chip framer that extends 10Gb Ethernet LANs over standard SONET/SDH networks.

The framer allows users to connect their LANs to SONET/SDH-based access equipment without the need for protocol conversion. The traffic remains IP/Ethernet-based but can be extended up to 20km.

"The next logical step to move up in data rates is to enable 10Gb Ethernet applications to extend corporate LANs to the MAN or WAN level," said Christopher Norris, VP of Cypress's data communications division.

"POSIC10G solves a number of technical and business issues at the same time. Using our chip, carriers can offer 10Gb Ethernet as a backbone technology over previously dark fiber using the same DWDM equipment deployed in the MAN," he added.

Supporting 10Gb Ethernet WAN PHY, 10Gb Ethernet LAN PHY, and OC-192c/STM-64, the chip integrates a 10Gb Ethernet MAC, SONET/SDH framer, a physical coding sublayer, and a WAN interface sublayer. These enable the POSIC10G to handle 10Gb Ethernet packets, jumbo frames, and address filtering.

The 624-pin BGA device also supports SPI 4.2the industry standard for network processor interfaces on 10Gbps linecardsand provides advanced support for SONET's automatic protection service (APS) with two on-chip SONET/SDH framer blocks.

Pricing starts at $600 in quantities of 1,000.
